When I was at an age questioning my own sexuality and as a society LGBT issues where just starting to pick up the intensity that it would have in the next decade, having access to a book that treated it as an issue but also with some normalcy would have been great and may have helped me cope with things differently it made me mourn a bit for a possible me that didn't happen. I understand some of the criticism about it and it's writing style but I didn't come to expecting it to be a literary great I was expecting a superhero story and I got what I asked for.Īs a now 26 year old gay man I'm not really its target anymore but looking back at when it was written and published I regret not reading it then.

Today I've read the whole thing (I've been at home waiting for a plumber to fix the shower) and felt like sharing some of my thoughts and feelings.Īs a booked aimed at the teen/young adult audience I think its a good book and great read. It's a book about a gay teen coming to terms with his superpowers and understanding his parents, while also being a standard superhero story.
