While Anti-Oedipus, due to its propounded target, had immediately become a bestseller, A Thousand Plateaus is published in a climate of indifference. The book is considered to be too difficult, confusing. However, in spite of all this waiting, success is far from coming. Highly expected, the readers that got passionate about reading the Anti-Oedipus book had to be patient for eight years to be able to discover its continuation. The theses put forth in A Thousand Plateaus create stupefaction. We have been wishing for some time to try and present some of his ideas to the English-speaking readers of our site and not only. He has a very radical stance on what culture means and how translation (both as a product and as an endeavour) should work.
He advocates for the translation of the untranslatable and of the untranslabitlity of the translatable, i.e.: to translate what is translatable and then to convert the translated into the translation, a dynamic, always-shifting, never-ending translation of a corpus. He is best known for his translations in Romanian of some of the most seminal works that the French literary theory of the 20 th century has given: Foucault’s Archeology of Knowledge, Deleuze and Guattari’s Anti-Oedipus I and II, Derrida’s work On Grammatology etc. Bogdan Ghiu is a Romanian poet and translator, whose interests, philological, cultural, theoretical and literary go into a horizontal, vertical, and diagonal intersection.
